Wisconsin Rapids, WI - On the strength of two sac flies and three late runs the La Crosse Loggers (16-13) beat the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (10-18) 5-1 Saturday night at Witter Field.
In the eighth inning of a 1-1 tie reliever Jesse Arreola loaded the bases on a double, a walk, and an intentional pass. The Loggers' Mike Marjama lofted a first pitch sac fly off new pitcher Dan Johnson to center field to break a 1-1 gridlock. Johnson allowed three more in the top of the ninth to spot the Loggers a four run lead.
Kyle Anderson made his third start of the season and threw well through five innings. Manager Scott Laverty imposed a 50 pitch limit on Anderson as a precautionary measure and the lefty reached the limit with the last pitch of the fifth. "My arm was just a little sore mid-week, but it is fine right now," Anderson said after the start.
Anderson struck out four and allowed just a single run on two hits. He had plenty of early success, mirroring his six inning outing in Battle Creek a week ago. "Battle Creek had a lot of lefties, tonight it was a lot of righties so it was a case of me just making the adjustment to this particular line-up tonight."
Trailing 1-0 when Anderson left the game, the Rafters scratched a run off Logger's starter Matt Flemer in the bottom of the fifth to get Anderson off the hook for the loss. Flemer turned around and pitched four straight scoreless innings to notch his first complete game of the summer. He allowed just five hits, no earned runs and struck out nine. Jesse Arreola picked up his first loss of the season.
The Rafters and Loggers wrap up the three game series with a Fourth of July game at 3:05 p.m. on Sunday. Then Monday the Rafters travel to Jack Hackman Field in Marshfield to host the Eau Claire Express at 7:05.
