Madison, WI July 7, 2010 (PRESS RELEASE)- The fourth home run of the game Wednesday night provided the crushing blow in an 11-5 loss for the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters at the hands of the Madison Mallards.
With the bases loaded in a 6-4 game, the Mallard's ninth place hitter Rafael Lopez lofted a grand slam over the wall in left field to put the game out of reach. The long ball from Lopez followed a two run home run from Harold Riggins in the third and a solo shot from Kyle Gaedele to lead of the game.
Four of the five Rafters pitchers on the night allowed at least a run. In the first inning starter Matt Baudino threw exactly 30 pitches, the limit for an inning, ending his night after one. Baudino allowed just three hits and a run on Gaedele's home run. The Rafters bullpen though could not hold down the Mallards as Three of the four relievers allowed at least two runs.
Cody Koback did keep the Rafters competitive in a back and forth contest early. Koback singled and scored in the second then hit a two run home run of his own to left in the fourth. The Rafters leading hitter on the season ended the night 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
One bright spot in relief came in the form of two shut-out innings from Garrett Branske. The catcher by trade allowed just a single and struck out two in his third appearance out of the pen this season.
Jesse Arreola loaded the bases before the Lopez grand slam and is tabbed with the loss while Madison's Tyler Jones picked up the win in relief. The win is the sixth straight for Madison as they even their first half record at 16-16, the Rafters fall to 11-21.
Thursday the Rafters take on the Mallards at 7:05 again in Madison before a three-game weekend series in Waterloo to kick off the second half. The Rafters return home Monday July 13th to take on the Mallards at 7:05. Whiplash the Cowboy Monkey will be on hand at Witter Field, sponsored by the Payroll Company.
