Madison, WI July 8, 2010 (PRESS RELEASE)- The Madison Mallards found one more answer than the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters did Thursday night in a 4-3 win at home. Each team came from behind at least once and the game stood tied at 2-2 as well as 3-3. The Mallards though pushed across a run in their half of the sixth to take the lead for good.
Evan Laude had the Rafters out in front early. The Rhode Island first baseman launched his first home run of the season to left to stake the Rafters to a 1-0 lead. But the Mallards tied it with a run in the second and it remained knotted until the fifth.
Not to be out-done Beck Wheeler launched his first home run of the season deep to left to give the Rafters a lead and extend his hitting streak to three games. "It comes down to me just being a little more comfortable at the plate of late," Wheeler said. "Really the entire team and I are in a good situation basically starting over in the second half where we can really make a run."
On the night the Rafters had one more run in their bats, but it was not enough. Directly after the Rafters manufactured a run in the top of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead, the Mallards scored their fourth run off of Damon McCormick in the bottom of the sixth to grab the lead for good.
McCormick threw well over his six full innings. He allowed the four runs on four hits including two triples. The right hander from Valparaiso struck out four and walked just one though he falls to1-5 on the season. Brad Douthit pitched around singles in the seventh and eighth to post two scoreless innings of relief.
Friday the Rafters kick off half number two with a three-game weekend series in Waterloo. The Rafters return home Monday July 13th to take on the Mallards at 7:05. Whiplash the Cowboy Monkey will be on hand at Witter Field, sponsored by the Payroll Company.
