BATTLE CREEK, MI (WAOW) - The Wisconsin Woodchucks (3-2, 21-19) completed the two-game sweep of the Battle Creek Bombers (0-5, 14-25) Tuesday night with a 6-3 win. The Woodchucks never trailed in the ballgame and their leads were never jeopardized after the fourth inning.
Chris Licon (3-2) started for the ‘Chucks against Bombers starter Kevin Bryant (1-1), and both pitchers were solid early. The game was scoreless through 3 innings before back-to-back hits with one out in the top of the fourth put two on base for Brandon King. King, who found out the morning of the game that he had been voted onto the South Division All-Star Team, took a 1-2 pitch from Bryant deep to right for a 3-run home run, his third of the season. The Woodchucks led 3-0 and King finished the game 2-3 with the homer, a double, two runs scored, 3 RBI, and a walk.
Licon returned to work and breezed through the Bombers' batting order. After the Woodchucks grabbed the 3-0 lead, the Bombers did not bring the tying run to the plate for the remainder of the game. Licon had a shutout through 6 innings while allowing only 4 hits, no walks, and striking out 3, all on just 69 pitches.
After Grant Dozar doubled scored two in the fifth and gave the Woodchucks a 5-0 lead, Licon entered the seventh and surrendered his first run on a two-out wild pitch. Licon then got the next four outs in a row, and headed to the ninth with a 6-1 lead. Licon entered in the ninth to go for his second complete game of the season, but allowed solid basehits on the first two pitches of the inning, and Anthony Drobnick came in to relieve Licon (1-2) with runners on the corners and no outs. Drobnick would allow both runners to score but nothing else, and the Woodchucks won 6-3. Licon's final line was 8+ innings pitched, 8 hits, no walks, 5 strikeouts, and 3 runs.
The Woodchucks play again Wednesday night when they begin a two game series with the Eau Claire Express at Athletic Park. First pitch is at 6:35 and Bryce Shafer (1-2) will pitch for the Woodchucks.
