WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) - For eight of the nine innings the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters and Madison Mallards squared off in a second straight pitcher's duel, but the odd inning featured five Mallards runs and the Rafters lost by a 5-2 final.
Pitching with a 1-0 lead after three, Dan Johnson tossed four scoreless innings in his first start. The fifth inning proved troublesome as Johnson allowed a lead single then a double to tie the game at one. The righty hit the next batter to end his night on the mound. Brad Douthit did not fare much better. The first two batters to face the lefty went single triple to set the margin at 4-1 in Madison's favor. A sacrifice fly with one out tallied the Mallard's fifth run.
Evan Laude continued to swing the bat well, despite the team's struggles. With two outs and runners on second and third in the third inning, Laude singled home the Rafters first run of the night. Then in the ninth the Rafters first-baseman notched a single and scored on a ground out to put his club back on the board and within three. That was as close as they came.
A pair of Cal State Bakersfield ‘Runners held the Mallards scoreless over the final four innings. Brandon Van Dam allowed a pair of singles in the sixth but induced a double play ground out to end the inning then retired the next six he faced. Garrett Branske meanwhile continued to impress in relief, working a 1-2-3 ninth to give him a fifth straight scoreless inning.
Wednesday the Rafters wrap up their three game home stand with a 7:05 game against the Green Bay Bullfrogs.
