WAUSAU (WAOW) - The Wisconsin Woodchucks swept a seven inning doubleheader tonight with the Eau Claire Express, improving to 5-2 and forcing a tie at the top of the division with the Express.
To begin the first game, both starting pitchers dominated their opposition through the first four innings. Bryce Shafer (2-2) went 5.1 innings allowing five hits, three walks, and striking out four. Eau Claire starter Ian Campbell (3-1) would go all six innings, allowing only four hits, walking two, and striking out five.
The only run of the first game came courtesy of Brock Stassi in the top of the fifth inning, as Stassi would hit a monster solo homer to right field. Mitchell Beacom came on with one on and one out in the sixth, and would go the distance in dominating fashion and notch the save 1-0.
The nightcap was also a pitchers duel, as the ‘Chucks would barely edge the Express by a score of 2-1. Nick Capito (3-0) got the win, going five innings and giving up four hits, one walk, and striking out three.
The ‘Chucks got on the board in the second inning when Kevin Pillar would lead off with a single and steal a bag, before Brandon King would step up to the plate and smack a double off the right field wall to score Pillar. Grand Dozar doubled off Eau Claire starter Brad Goldberg (1-4) with one out in the third. After a Brock Stassi fly out, Travis Whitmore mashed a clutch two out single to bring Pillar home and make the score 2-0.
Andrew Klausmeier pitched a scoreless 6th inning and strike out the side, before giving way to Anthony Drobnick to notch his third save on the season.
With the wins, the ‘Chucks move into a three way tie for first place in the South Division with the La Crosse Loggers and Eau Claire Express. The ‘Chucks will now host the Green Bay Bullfrogs tomorrow night to kick off a home-away-home series to finish play before the All-Star break.
