Armed man shot

GENEVA TOWNSHIP, Wis. (AP) -- Walworth County authorities are identifying the man killed by police Tuesday after he failed to obey instructions to keep his hands away from his gun.

The Janesville Gazette reports he's 47-year-old Roman O. Petriw, who had been living at a residence to which police and deputies were called about 6:30 a.m. regarding a suicidal man.

Authorities gave the man instructions to drop his gun, but he shot himself twice in the torso and dropped the weapon. They ordered him to keep his hands up, but he went for the gun.

Two officers from Geneva and a sheriff's deputy fired their weapons. The man was incapacitated and officers performed CPR, but a coroner pronounced Petriw dead about 8:30 a.m.

Undersheriff Kurt Picknell says Petriw was originally from the Chicago area and had been living at the resident for several weeks with the permission of the homeowner.
