Islamic Society hopes open house will defuse tension
SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) -- The Islamic Society of Sheboygan hopes an open house at its newly opened mosque will defuse any lingering tension in the community.
The event will be July 31 at its mosque in the Town of Wilson.
The Sheboygan Press says dozens of people objected when the idea was first raised this year of converting a health-food store into the county's first mosque. Forums that were held on the issue in Sheboygan and Oostburg drew hundreds of people.
Some critics said a mosque could attract Islamic fundamentalists with anti-American feelings. Supporters said the constitutionally protected freedom of religion required the town to approve the mosque.
The town board approved a conditional-use permit for the facility in May.
