Rafters hold off Loggers 2-1

La Crosse, WI – July 17, 2010 (PRESS RELEASE).  Losing your starter after just an inning and two thirds due to a rain delay can often hamper a club's chances at a win. But the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters got clutch pitching from three relievers to beat the La Crosse Loggers 2-1 Saturday night.

Chris Green started for the Rafters (3-5) and had the bases loaded with two outs in the second when the rains came to Copeland Park and forced a delay of nearly two hours. Steve Godawa entered the game when play resumed and struck out Tony Mueller to end the interrupted Loggers (6-3) threat and keep it scoreless.

Godawa went on to toss three and two thirds innings with five strikeouts. He allowed just a single run on a two out double in the third inning. Jesse Arreola picked up where Godawa left off, entering with one out in the fifth. Arreola threw two and two thirds innings of scoreless ball, allowed just one hit and struck out three. Brad Douthit then nailed down the final three outs, in a three up, three down, two strikeout performance to pick up his first save, securing the win for Arreola.

Trailing 1-0 in the fifth, Cody Koback pulled the Rafters even with a solo home run deep over the left field wall. The home run is Koback's team high third of the season. Then in the seventh, still tied at one, Jenzen Torres worked a two out walk before Brad Hallberg and Craig Shul singled back to back to load the bases. With Matt Johnson at the plate a wild pitch allowed Torres to score the go ahead run.

Shul's single in the seventh marked the second of three eventual hits on the night for the freshman from UNLV. "I've been seeing the ball better over the last few games," Shul said. "Plus getting my first few base hits out of the way definitely has given me some confidence in my swing and approach at the plate."

The three game series against the Loggers winds up Sunday at 5:05. Then, after a three day break for the Northwoods League All-Star festivities, the Rafters return home for one against the Wisconsin Woodchucks on Thursday July, 22. Actor James Best, who starred as Rosco P. Coltrane on the hit TV series "The Dukes of Hazzard" will be on hand.
