WDEZ's Vanessa Ryan in the running to co-host with Regis Philbin

WAUSAU (WAOW)--  Right now, Live with Regis & Kelly is holding a contest for women in radio.

WDEZ's Vanessa Ryan is one of 100 semifinalists vying to co-host the show, I caught up with her to see what she has to say about the experience.

For the past 8 years, 5 days a week, from 10 until 1, you hear the voice and bubbly personality of Vanessa Ryan on WDEZ Radio.

Born and raised in Stevens Point, Vanessa is proud of her small town background.

Vanessa says, "...I'm small town radio... small town Central Wisconsin, and if you look at the list of names it's Toronto, it's Boston, New York, Philly... all these huge names... then you see Wausau, Wisconsin, the smallest community on there. .... I've cried these past few days because of the sweet comments they're giving and the fact that they're giving me support."

Vanessa was shocked when she heard listeners nominated her for Regis and Kelly's "Women of Radio Co-host for a Day" contest.

Vanessa says, "... I thought I was being pranked... there's no way this is happening... gave me all the details, the web site.. I was absolutely shocked... I was blown away...I was actually shaking and almost in tears and it was amazing news, I just couldn't believe it."

Those who work with Vanessa can believe it though.

Gregg Adams, of WDEZ, says, "...  what you hear on the radio is Vanessa. There are some people who flip the switch, they have a character they have a voice... different personality off air... they get into this mold that they really aren't off the air... well, the fascinating stuff you hear on the air is the same person she is off the air."

Nikki Montgomery, of WDEZ agrees, "... what a great opportunity...and it really shows the support she's got from the community...people identify with Vanessa... she's a mom, she has kids, she's coaching soccer, she's really involved in her community."

Co-hosting a popular syndicated program on ABC, live before a national audience in New York, does make Vanessa a bit nervous.

Vanessa says, "... knowing that other people think I'm kind of cool is really the neatest feeling...and I get emotional just thinking about it... I'm just a regular girl from small town Wisconsin and it's pretty exciting."

From our area, Jenny Clark "AJ" of Y106.5 out of Plover, is also in the running.

On Monday, August 9th, 10 finalists will be announced on "Live with Regis and Kelly".

Viewers will get to vote online for 4 nominees, who will then co-host with Regis Philbin sometime between August 17th and 19th in New York.
