12 years in prison for mayor's attacker

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A judge sentenced the man accused of brutally attacking Milwaukee's mayor to 12 years in prison Friday.

Mayor Tom Barrett choked up in court when he testified that he thought he was going to die after being attacked with a tire iron last summer. Barrett urged Milwaukee County Circuit Judge David Hansher to send 21-year-old Anthony J. Peters to prison for "a long period of time."

The mayor was leaving the Wisconsin State Fair last August when he heard a call for help. Barrett tried to intervene in a dispute between Peters and the grandmother of Peters' daughter.

Peters apologized to Barrett and his family and said he wanted to take responsibility for his actions.

Hansher also ordered to 10 years of supervision for Peters.
