WAUSAU (WAOW)--A busy day for the Marathon County Dive Team, but thankfully, not for an emergency. Divers spent Friday at Blue Gill Park in Wausau training for future cases.
They used metal detectors and a Sonar device to find underwater objects. The Sonar system is placed in the water. It works like a flashlight casting a shadow on things like weapons, bodies or cars. The objects show up as small purple figures on a computer screen. Then team members on land tell the divers exactly where to find them.
"If you've been in the waters in Marathon County they are extremely dark. Most of our diving is zero visibility; we can't see anything. The divers are functionally blind. They do everything by feel," says Lt.. Mark Wagers of the Marathon Co. Dive Team.
Headsets let team members communicate even from underwater. The Dive Team Lieutenant says next month they'll practice other skills, possibly pulling a vehicle out of the water.
