Attorney General optimistic about plans to stop Asian Carp

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- Attorney General JB Van Hollen is optimistic about legal action to protect The Great Lakes.

Earlier this week, Wisconsin and four "Great Lakes states" filed a lawsuit against the federal government and Chicago's Water Department. They demand stronger protection against Asian Carp, an invasive species that threatens the Great Lakes.

"In the short term," explained Van Hollen. "close the locks, put up screens and barriers so that we can poison certain areas were we know the fish have already gotten past the barriers."

The U.S. Supreme Court refused this request twice last year. State officials say the situation became urgent last month after a live Asian carp was found within a few miles of Lake Michigan.
