Wisconsin Rapids, WI – July 24, 2010 (PRESS RELEASE). Saturday's day night double-header should have provided a tale of two games, but instead both turned out in similar fashion as the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters dropped both ends of a double header to the Eau Claire Express. Outscored 26 to three on the night, a 13-2 final and a 13-1 final propelled the Express to the Saturday sweep.
Dan Johnson started game one and allowed five runs over two innings before three Rafters relievers surrendered eight unanswered runs to send the Rafters to their eighth loss of the half. The Express, using a run in every inning but the third, piled on 16 hits en route to their 13 runs and tenth win of the half.
Game two stayed within reach for a bit longer. Kyle Anderson started and allowed four runs over two innings. The lefty settled in through the third and fourth to hold the Express scoreless for just the second and third times on the day. Michael Smith pulled the Rafters as close as they'd been with a solo home run in the fourth. But Eau Claire snuffed out any possible spark from the Rafters offense with three runs in the top of the fifth, and cruised to their second huge victory of the day.
A pair of Rafters notched three hit games, one in each end of the double-header. Brad Hallberg pieced together a perfect 3-for-3 afternoon with a walk as well in game one's losing cause. Brian Embery finished up with a 3-for-4 night in the second game after singling in his first three at bats.
After Saturday's day long baseball extravaganza the Rafters travel to Eau Claire Sunday for a return engagement against the Express. The Rafters return home for two against the Waterloo Bucks Monday and Tuesday at Witter Field. Both games start at 7:05.
