Top public defender announces retirement

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin's top public defender is announcing plans to retire after 22 years.

Wisconsin's Office of the State Public Defender says Nick Chiarkas' retirement in January as its leader will end the longest run of any such official in the state or nation.

Chiarkas has headed the office that provides legal representation for low-income criminal defendants since 1988.

He says in a statement he and other public defenders try to live up to the American ideal that justice is "for all."

The Public Defender Board is launching a national search for his replacement.
