WAUSAU (WAOW) - Wausau East High School announced Tuesday that head girls soccer coach Ken Smith has resigned from that position. He will continue to teach and coach at Horace Mann Middle School.
In a press release, Lumberjacks Athletic Director Greg Harvey commended Smith, saying, "He has led his team with class, persistence, a passion for the game, and has always made family a priority in his program."
Smith took over the program in 2006. East won the Wisconsin Valley Conference and made it to the state quarterfinals in each of the last 2 seasons. The Lumberjacks have been in the sectional finals in each of the last 4 campaigns.
Harvey also announced that David Welles would replace Smith as head coach, after several seasons as an assistant. "David has been an integral part of our program's growth and success," said Harvey. "David represents continuity in our program as we move forward into the future. Our girls are very comfortable with Coach Welles and they are eager to get started under David's direction. We are lucky to have such a valuable resource at our disposal at this time."
