FEMA officials to tour Milwaukee flood damage

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Federal Emergency Management Agency officials will start touring flood-damaged parts of Milwaukee on Wednesday.

FEMA and state Emergency Management officials are set to investigate damage to both private and public homes, businesses and other structures.

The damage assessment process is expected to continue through the end of the week.

The investigations come as Gov. Jim Doyle is seeking a federal disaster declaration for Milwaukee. FEMA's assessment determines whether the flooding is considered a major disaster, making residents eligible for federal help.

Flood damage in Milwaukee County is estimated at $37.5 million. Almost 9,600 homes in Milwaukee County were damaged, with about 200 sustaining major damage and five destroyed.
