Detroit police department, female officers settle lawsuit

DETROIT (AP) -- A lawsuit claiming six pregnant officers were discriminated against by the Detroit Police Department has been settled.

The Detroit Free Press reports Thursday that the suit was dismissed after a settlement was reached.

The officers had claimed they were forced to go on sick leave, even if they could perform other duties. Five said they were stuck at home without pay after exhausting sick leave.

The suit was filed in 2008.

The Detroit News reports four officers forced on unpaid leave will receive $55,000 each.

As part of the settlement, female officers or women applying for work will not be asked if they are pregnant or anticipate pregnancy. An officer also can't be assigned desk work due to pregnancy unless she requests it.
