(WAOW)- Drivers will race 105 laps at State Park Speedway tonight in the 30th annual Larry Detjens Memorial.
They're honoring one of their own who died in a racing accident back in 1981.
The night also brings back several legends to a track where they once drove.
That includes Wisconsin short track legend and Wisconsin Rapids native Dick Trickle who frequently raced at state park and who also was a great friend of the late Detjens.
Part owner of the track and Detjens' nephew, Scott Wimmer is also in town for the big event.
The two guys are excited to have this great race back in the Wausau area.
Says Scott Wimmer, "The 30th edition of the Detjens Memorial, it doesn't seem like it's been that long. The race went away for a while but we were able to bring it back and we're gonna have a great night here, a lot of great late models, and I'm really looking forward to it."
Says Dick Trickle, "I haven't been here in 12 or 15 years and I can't believe what the Wimmers are doing here, they're bringing racing back to the Wausau area. This is really gonna be a place to be at, and me to be the Grand Marshall of the Larry Detjens Memorial is an honor, I'm just glad to be here."
