Milwaukee crime continues to decline

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Milwaukee's overall crime has decreased almost 8 percent in the first six months of 2010 compared with the same time last year.

Crime continues a downward trend in the state's largest city, with the numbers being down 19 percent from the same six months in 2007.

The biggest changes came in rape, which dropped 32 percent from the same time last year, and arson, which decreased 28 percent.

Total violent crime dropped more than 12 percent. Homicides had been down 12 percent in the first six months, but then there were 11 homicides in 19 days.

Police attributed some decreases to the city's 500 block watchers.

The only crime that increased was burglary, which went up nearly 4 percent compared with the same period in 2007.
