Madison, WI July 31, 2010 (PRESS RELEASE)- Two big flies from Jenzen Torres had the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters in position for a one run win Saturday night, but a clutch two run single in the bottom of the eighth for the Madison Mallards beat the Rafters 5-4.
With a 4-3 lead to protect, Brad Douthit began his third inning of relief in the eighth. Douthit walked the bases loaded around a strike out. With one down Madison short-stop Josh Parr slashed the first pitch he saw past the dive of Matt Cornwell at short to drive home what turned out to be the winning runs. Saturday marks the second straight game the Mallards beat the Rafters with runs in the eighth inning.
Tied at two into the fifth, Jenzen Torres began his power display with a solo home run deep to left pushing the Rafters up 3-2 with one swing. In the bottom of the sixth inning Douthit allowed a solo home run to knot the game once again. But Torres again broke out the home run stroke, this time an opposite field home run to put the Rafters up 4-3 before the Mallards' second straight heroic eighth inning comeback.
In his second start for the Rafters, Jesse Arreola allowed two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The lefty clamped down from then on, delivering four scoreless innings through the fifth. Arreola allowed five hits, walked three and struck out two.
A two out single from Brian Embery put the Rafters up 1-0 after one half inning. After the Mallards picked up their two in the bottom of the first, the Rafters tied the game in the fourth when Craig Shul singled, went to second on a sacrifice and scored on a wild throw following a Derek Brown single.
The loss is Douthit's fifth of the season in relief as the Rafters fall to 6-14 on the second half.
Sunday the Rafters return home for Cancer Awareness night presented by the Marshfield Clinic at 5:05. The Rafters will wear pink uniforms, available in a silent auction going on now at raftersbaseball.com and continuing throughout the game.
