Chucks sweep away Battle Creek with 5-1 win on Sunday

WAUSAU (PRESS RELEASE)-  Tonight the Wisconsin Woodchucks took care of business, completing the three game home sweep of the Battle Creek Bombers in a Sunday matinée at Athletic Park by a score of 5-1. The Woodchucks advanced to 14-7 with the win, while the Battle Creek Bombers fell to 2-17. Jordan Luvisi started the game, and lived dangerously through the first four innings. Luvisi allowed six hits and two BB in his only four innings of work, but got the 'Chucks into the fifth inning without allowing a run.

The 'Chucks would get out to an early lead for the third consecutive game, plating a run in the bottom of the first. Rob Lind would walk with one out, and advance to second on a wild pitch in the ensuing at-bat. Pat Terry would send Lind home with a two out single to make the score 1-0.

After an uneventful second inning, the 'Chucks bats would go to work and take a decisive lead in the third. Kevin Pillar and Rob Lind would lead off the inning with a single and walk, to put a runner in scoring position for Travis Whitmore. Whitty would follow with a nice single, while both runners were on the move. Pillar would come around and score easily while Lind would hold up at third. A ten pitch battle would ensue between Pat Terry and Bombers starter Anthony Sambula, concluding with a two RBI monstrous double off the right field wall- making the score 4-0.

Heading into the fifth inning, manager Guido Aspeitia would call it a night for Luvisi, and go to his grizzled veteran ground-baller Don Lisi. Luvisi has arguably one poor pitch all night, when Josh Lyon his a first pitch moonshot home run in the sixth inning.

Including the home run, Lisi went 5.0 innings, striking out 9, walking 1, allowing 1 hit and 1 earned run, while advancing to 5-2. Lisi and an insurance run the seventh would spell another Woodchucks victory over the Bombers.

Following the win, the 'Chucks remain in possession of the second playoff spot in the south division, but will face the powerhouse Eau Claire Express Monday and Tuesday in Eau Claire. Tonight's game marks the last home game for the Woodchucks until next Monday, August 9th, as the Wisconsin Valley Fair rolls into Wausau. If the 'Chucks can retain their seed on this gargantuan road trip, they'll play seven of their final games at home to defend their playoff chances.
