About 500 attend public meeting on oil spill

MARSHALL, Mich. (AP) -- About 500 people have filled a Michigan high school gym to hear updates on a pipeline spill that has dumped hundreds of thousands gallons of oil into a nearby river.

Federal officials put on a slideshow Monday night on the history of the spill from an Enbridge Inc. oil pipeline into Talmadge Creek, a tributary of the Kalamazoo River.

Officials told those at Marshall High School that they've used booms to keep as much oil as possible from flowing downstream.

Environmental Protection Agency official Mark Durno says the agency is going to be in the area for months and says people will see small patches of oil sheen on the water for some time.

The crowd was polite and lightly applauding after each official spoke.
