Parents plead guilty to chaining son

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) -- The parents accused of shackling their special needs son to a pole in their basement have pleaded guilty in Chippewa County.

Forty-nine-year-old Song Xiong was sentenced to 40 days in jail on a misdemeanor charge of recklessly subjecting a person at risk of abuse. The misdemeanor charge against the mother, 58-year-old Mai Xiong, was dismissed. Both parents pleaded guilty to a felony charge as part of a deferred agreement. The felonies will be dismissed in three years if they comply with the court's orders.

The parents say that because their 21-year-old son had run away previously, they chained him in the basement last November. The man managed to free himself and went to a convenience store.
