EAU CLAIRE (PRESS RELEASE) The Wisconsin Woodchucks (14-9, 32-26) were unable to hold an early lead against the Eau Claire Express (19-5, 41-17) Tuesday night at Carson Park and lost 7-4. The Express jumped on the ‘Chucks in the 3rd and scored 9 runs in the 3rd inning in the 2 games in the series.
Kevin Pillar led off with a walk in the top of the 1st and the ‘Chucks loaded the bases with no outs. Pillar scored on a Pat Terry double play, and the Woodchucks had the early 1-0 lead, but failed to score a crooked number. Cory Hall (2-3) held the lead until the 2nd when Will Fadness singled home Nate Baumann to tie the game 1-1. Things came unraveled for Hall in the 3rd when the first 5 Express hitters reached against Hall, chasing the Woodchucks starter from the game. Eric Fritz finished the inning, adding no damage, but the Express led 6-1. Fritz gave the ‘Chucks a chance to get back in the game with 4 shutout innings, allowing just 1 hit.
Jamie Bruno got the chucks back in the game in the 4th with his 7th home run of the season. It came with Pat Terry on 1st base and cut the Express lead to 3, 6-3. Express ace Ian Cambell (6-1) settled down after that and kept the Woodchucks off the board through the 7th.
The Express added one on a suicide squeeze in the 8th, when Drew Heithoff dropped down a perfect sacrifice bunt. Heithoff also had a hit in the 3rd inning, which extended his hitting streak to 16 straight games, setting a new Eau Claire franchise record.
Sharif Othman hit a towering home run in the 9th, his 4th of the season, but it was too little too late as the Woodchucks lost 7-4.
The ‘Chucks have the season's last off-day Wednesday before they play again Thursday night at Witter Field. The game starts a 3 game series with the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters and all 3 games begin at 7:05. The game can be heard on Fox Sports 1390 AM.
