WAUSAU (WAOW) - Chucks field manager Guido Aspeitia stresses good work on defense and Robbie De La Cruz has zero problem with that. Besides playing 'D', the infielder likes to play jokes as well.
Says Robbie De La Cruz in a thick accent, "I'm not from here, I'm from Dominican, I come here to play baseball, you know it's fun. Guido call me to come play with Woodchucks, and I just hit, you give me bat and I hit and play first."
Robbie, actually from Fresno, California, likes to be quite the comedian off the field, but on it, he's all business at first base, one of the best fielders on the team, over 100 more putouts than any other Chuck out there.
Says De La Cruz, "Defense is something I try and take pride in, I love playing defense."
Says Guido Aspeitia, "I don't think there's a better defensive first baseman in the league, I said that from day one when I knew we were gonna have him out here."
This guy also does some work at the plate though, ranking in the top ten in batting average, on base percentage and RBI entering Tuesday. He prides himself on coming through especially in the clutch.
Says De La Cruz, "I love stepping into the box with runners in scoring position and knowing that pitcher can't beat you with whatever he throws at you."
Says Aspeitia, "He's one of those guys that he's better when the game is on the line, he'll give away a lot of at-bats when nothing's there, but when it's crunch time, he bears down and he does a really good job for us, I love that little guy."
And it's not the first time De La Cruz has played under Guido Aspeitia. The two were on the same Canada summer league team back in 2008. Reporting in Wausau, Russ Owens, Newsline nine sports.
