Circuit Court Judge backs no-wake zone for Wolf River
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A judge has upheld an ordinance designed to improve the safety of boaters and swimmers on a popular stretch of the Wolf River.
Winnebago County Circuit Court Judge Barbara Hart Key on Wednesday upheld a slow no-wake zone for areas of the river on weekends and holidays.
The Town of Wolf River passed the ordinance last year covering a stretch of the river near Fremont amid concerns that large speed boats create wakes that cause accidents for smaller ones and endanger swimmers and vacationers.
The Tri-County Powerboat Alliance filed a lawsuit arguing the ordinance went too far and was unfair to powerboat owners. The group said that imposing a speed limit was a better alternative.
Key upheld an earlier ruling that the ordinance is valid.
