Lee Westwood won't play in PGA at Whistling Straits due to injury
AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- Lee Westwood is pulling out of the PGA Championship next week because of an ankle injury.
Westwood, who had a chance to go to No. 1 in the world this week at the Bridgestone Invitational, shot a 76 on Friday. Hours later, he announced he was withdrawing from the final two rounds at Firestone, and the final major of the year next week at Whistling Straits.
It was a major setback for the 37-year-old from England, considered the best without a major. He was runner-up to Phil Mickelson at the Masters, and he was runner-up by seven shots to Louis Oosthuizen at the British Open.
