Chucks top Rafters 10-7 Saturday at Witter Field


WISCONSIN RAPIDS (PRESS RELEASE)-  The Wisconsin Woodchucks (16-10, 34-27) played yet another back and forth game with the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (7-22, 18-43) and scored 3 runs in the 9th to break a 7-7 tie and won 10-7 at Witter Field Saturday night.  The Woodchucks finish the 2010 season 6-4 against the Rafters. 

The Woodchucks started off fast when Kevin Pillar, Rob Lind, and Travis Whitmore all reached and scored in the top of the first, and the ‘Chucks led 3-0.  Pat Terry and Brian Sharp provided the RBI in the inning, for Terry it was his first of 2.  Terry finished with 5 RBI in the series. 

The Rafters scored once in the 2nd off Brock Stassi (2-2) but then busted out for 4 runs in the 3rd, capped off by a 3-run homer by Cody Koback, and the Rafters led 5-4.  Jerad Eickhoff (3-2) started the 4th in relief of Stassi, and kept the Rafters down until the Woodchucks came to the plate in the 6th. Sharp walked before Jamie Bruno hit his 8th home run of the season, an opposite field shot out to left, and the ‘Chucks led 6-5.  Chris Amezquita scored in the inning as well giving the ‘Chucks a 7-5 lead. 

Eickhoff allowed 2 base runners in the 7th before Jayson McClaren (3-0) came in to relieve him.  McClaren threw 3 wild pitches in the inning, half of the Woodchucks'  on the night and both inherited runners scored to tie the game at 7.  McClaren ultimately earned the win, allowing no hits in 2 innings, striking out 2. 

The Woodchucks bats came up big again in the 9th.  Brian Sharp reached on an infield hit to put runners on the corners with 2 outs, when Jamie Bruno again stepped to the plate and delivered the big hit.  Bruno poked a 1-1 pitch into left field for an RBI basehit and the ‘Chucks led 8-7.  Bruno finished 2-5 with the homer and 3 RBI.  Amezquita added a 2 RBI double for insurance and Mitchell Beacom got his 4th save with a 1-2-3 9th and the ‘Chucks won 10-7. 

The Woodchucks finish their 6 game road trip Sunday night in Eau Claire.  First pitch is at 6:05 and the game can be heard on Fox Sports 1390 AM and WSAU 550 AM and 99.9 FM.
