On the heels of an undefeated season and its fifth state championship in school history, the Edgar Wildcats begin practice for the 2010 season with high expectations. Despite losing more than half their starters to graduation, the defending champs believe they've got what it takes to get back to Madison and raise another trophy.

"We're pretty optimistic and the kids have worked hard all summer," Edgar head coach Jerry Sinz said. "Some of them were working the Friday morning after the state championship game last year because that's just the kind of guys they are."

"The guys we've got coming back were very good, so they'll be alright where they are right now and then the class we've got under us, the junior class, is pretty strong," said Edgar senior Dakota Heidman.

One of the biggest holes the Wildcats will have to fill comes at the quarterback position where they have to replace last year's state offensive player of the year, Justin Sinz.

"In addition to playing quarterback and kicking and punting, he played defense, so he will be replaced for like four guys," Sinz said. "Those guys in all those positions are looking pretty good so far."

The Wildcats have plenty of talent returning to help get them back to state, most notably all-state defensive tackle Jeff Raymond.

"I'm confident in all these guys," Raymond said. "They worked hard all summer and I think they're ready to prove it now."

"We have a lot of guys that didn't play a lot last year, but they worked hard all summer and stuff and we have a decent amount of guys returning so I think we should be good," said Edgar running back Reed Lehman.

Edgar will begin its journey for a second straight state title August 27 at Spencer/Columbus Catholic.
