GREEN BAY (WAOW) - The Wisconsin Woodchucks (19-10, 37-27) peppered 17 hits at Joannes Stadium Tuesday night to finish off the sweep of the Green Bay Bullfrogs (18-12, 36-28) with a 12-5 win. The Win pushed the ‘Chucks ahead of the Bullfrogs in the south division and was the ‘Chucks 5th win in a row.
The game started out as a see-saw contest with 5 lead changes in the early goings. The Woodchucks scored first when Brock Stassi came home on a Robbie De La Cruz sacrifice fly in the 2nd inning and the ‘Chucks led 1-0, but the Bullfrogs came back with 2 off Don Lisi (5-2) in the bottom of the frame for a 2-1 Bullfrogs lead.
Firing right back, Rob Lind and Travis Whitmore scored for the ‘Chucks in the 3rd to retake the lead 3-2. Whitmore finished the night with a quintessential, well-rounded stat line with 4 hits, a double, 2 RBI, 3 runs scored, and his league leading 26th stolen base of the season. Again the Bullfrogs rallied back when Dean Mlachnik hit a 2 run homer in the bottom half, and the Bullfrogs led again 4-3.
Perhaps tired of the drama, the Woodchucks ended the back-and-forth in the 4th with an offensive explosion. 11 hitters came to the plate in the inning and the Woodchucks scored 6 times for a 9-4 lead. Eric Fritz had 2 hits in the inning, and the frame also included Jamie Bruno reaching base on the rare catcher's obstruction call when Ryan Kehl's glove hit Bruno's bat during his swing. The ‘Chucks also added 3 more runs, helped by 3 walks and a hit batter in the 5th, and the game was well in hand at 13-4.
Andrew Klausmeier (3-2) started the 4th for the Woodchucks and essentially finished the ballgame, going 5 fantastic innings allowing just one run on 5 hits, no walks, and 5 strikeouts. Klausmeier earned his 3rd win of the year. Ryan Iverson finished the game with a quick 9th inning, allowing just a single.
The Woodchucks play again Wednesday night as they start a season ending 6-game homestand. The first 3 games are with the Waterloo Bucks. Nick Capito is scheduled to pitch tomorrow night for the ‘Chucks with first pitch at 6:35.
