Everest and East Both Look For Improvement on Gridiron

(WAOW) - On Friday, Newsline 9's "Countdown to Kickoff" series features a pair of Wisconsin Valley Conference neighbors trying to return to prominence.

At Wausau East, spirits were high on the first day that players could don the pads and do some actual hitting.  The Lumberjacks are ready to rebound from a 1-8 season that included a 2nd-straight winless conference campaign.  East coach Tom McCormick says his team lost quite a few players from that squad, including their starting quarterback.  But he likes some of his young talent.

DC Everest also lost a great player, WVC Player of the Year Konrad Zagzebski, who now suits up for the UW Badgers.  Still, they plan to put last season's struggles behind them.  2009 was the first campaign in 16 years that didn't end with the Evergreens in the playoffs.  Instead, they struggled to a 2-6 record.  Head coach Wayne Steffenhagen, the 5th-winningest coach in state history, says that can change if his boys are willing to do the little things every single day this season.
