Wisconsin Rapids, WI August 15, 2010 (PRESS RELEASE). The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters discovered single inning heroics cannot account for seven errors as they lost 10-7 to the Battle Creek Bombers Sunday night.
With an error on a ground ball hit by the very first batter of the game, the Bombers scored a run in the first to take a 1-0 lead. Three runs came home in the second with another error aiding the cause. All told the Bombers scored at least one run in the first five innings, with the help of five total Rafters errors, to take an early 8-0 lead.
Despite the errors the Rafters stormed back to make it a game in the bottom of the fifth. This time it was the Bombers turn to give the Rafters extra outs, as back-to-back errors loaded the bases with no one out. Matt Cornwell singled home the Rafters first run of the night to start what turned into a seven run inning.
Brad Hallberg brought the Rafters close with another two out hit. After Ryan Palermo's sac fly left a runner on first, a walk and a single loaded the bases again for Hallberg. The Rafters second sacker doubled home two to make it a one run game.
After a clutch scoreless inning of relief in the sixth, two more Rafters errors put Garrett Branske behind the eight ball in the seventh and the Bombers went on to score two in the inning. Matt Cornwell logged a scoreless eighth and ninth in relief, but the Rafters never crossed the plate again.
With the loss the Rafters fall to 19-50 on the season while the Bombers move a game ahead at 20-49.
