Countdown to Kickoff: Antigo, Tomahawk, Rhinelander

by Jayson Geiser

(WAOW) - One week before the first football Friday of the new high school season, we continue our Countdown to Kickoff.

Football-only conference realignment is on the WIAA schedule for next fall, which means we'll continue to see teams shifting from league to league over the next couple of campaigns.  Tomahawk will move into the Marawood Conference in 2011, but is playing an independent schedule this season.  The Hatchets won just 3 games in the past 2 years combined.  They know they'll need to double that total to reach the playoffs this season.

Rhinelander played an independent schedule last season and completes the transition from the Wisconsin Valley to the Great Northern Conference this fall.  The move should mean less travel for the Hodags.  They've also installed a new defensive scheme that they think will help them improve on last year's 2-7 record.

Antigo is a charter member of the GNC, and will stay there for the foreseeable future.  Despite joining the up-start conference 3 years ago, the Red Robins have continued to face some of their old Valley foes.  That practice continues this year, with Wausau West, Wausau East, and Marshfield all on the schedule.  With 15 starters returning from last year's squad, the Robins hope another challenging slate will prepare them for a deep playoff run.
