Eager students pickup free backpacks

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- It was like Christmas in August Saturday for some eager students in Wausau.

Backpacks stuffed with enough supplies to get the school year started were handed out to thousands. It's the culmination of the "Fill a Backpack, Fill a Need" project put on every year by the Marathon County Workplace Council. This year, the need rose to more than 4,400 students, the most in the program's 12 year history.

Families who qualify came to pick up their packs and gear up for another school year.

"When we arrived here at about 7:30am," explained Shelly Kaiser, a member of the Workplace Volunteer Council. "There were long lines of people anxious to get in. I think the lines stayed until about 10:00am. There were lots of families, lots of kids have come through. They got the supplies and backpacks they need to start school."

All the gear inside the packs was donated by area businesses and community members. Volunteers have spent the last week sorting the supplies and stuffing the backpacks.
