State report cites Wis hospital for reused syringe

MADISON (AP) -- A state report has cited the University of Wisconsin Hospital for four deficiencies after a syringe was reused on a second patient, requiring that patient to undergo testing for infectious diseases.

The state Department of Health Services released a report Friday following the July 26 incident. It faults the hospital in part for failing to report the incident promptly.

The state is requiring the hospital to submit a correction plan.

UW Hospital chief executive Donna Katen-Bahensky says the hospital will redesign its policies and make sure patient-safety problems are reported promptly.

One of the patients was 44-year-old Vincent Stepter of Madison. He tells the Wisconsin State Journal he's still angry about what happened but he's glad the hospital has acknowledged its errors.
