Merrill schools consider sex ed changes

MERRILL (AP) -- A former Merrill school board member is asking the district to scrap human growth and development classes if it can't stick with abstinence-only lessons.

The district is changing its curriculum to conform with a new law which requires districts that provide sex education to teach about birth control and sexually transmitted diseases.

The Fond du Lac Reporter reports opponents and proponents outlined their viewpoints at a meeting of an advisory committee Friday.

Former board member Joe Fink made his position clear, saying the schools should cancel the class for the year so the community can scrutinize what changes will be made.

But Marie Marrier, a retired nurse practitioner, says students need accurate information about sex and contraception and the district can't "continue to play ostrich."
