WAUSAU (WAOW) -- Kayakers came to Wausau to show their stuff Sunday. It was part of the Midwest Freestyle Championships at the Wausau Whitewater course.
Seventy-five kayakers from all over the country came to test their skills. The championships featured freestyle kayakers who perform tricks in the water. They're scored based on the difficulty of their tricks.
Besides the competition, organizers feel the event is vital in promoting the little-known sport of kayaking.
"The biggest thing we hope to get out of the event is just a great way to share our sport," explained Ashley Knutson, the course operations manager. "It's kayaking that all these competitors know and love with the community. So we always welcome anyone to come down here and ask us questions"
The event was open to both beginners and experienced kayakers.
