BROKAW (WAOW) -- They're packed up and ready to go. Soldiers from Brokaw's 428th Engineer Company are preparing for a year long deployment to Afghanistan. But friends and family couldn't let them leave without a proper send-off.

They gathered at the Brokaw Army Reserve Facility Monday morning for one last goodbye. There were hugs, kisses, and tears. It was an emotional time. Especially for Captain Jim Servi of Merrill. He's saying farewell to his wife Angie and their 4 month old son Joey.

"It'll probably be the hardest thing I'll ever do," Capt. Servi said. "Missing the first steps, missing the first words, all that stuff. I'm not looking forward to that part."

This will be Captain Servi's second tour overseas. But the couple knows, this time is a little different.

"We know what's coming, kind of," explained Angie Servi. "But throw the little one into the mix and it's something we haven't experienced before. So we don't know exactly what that will be like."

Equipped with a new video camera, letters, and the Internet, the Servi's know it'll be tough, but say their family can make it through anything.

The unit heads to Fort McCoy for a month and a half of training. Then's it's off to Afghanistan where they'll work to clean up roadside bombs. It's a dangerous mission, but one the soldier's and their families truly believe in.

"It directly changes lives and it changes the world," Capt. Servi said. "So we know what we're doing, we know the mission."

The 130 soldiers from the 428th Engineer Company hail from all over the Midwest.
