John J. Hartleben, age 84, Wittenberg, died Thursday, August 19, 2010 at Ministry Saint Clare's Hospital, Weston.
He was born November 4, 1925 in the Township of Morris, Shawano County, the son of the late John and Grace (Thompson) Hartleben.
On August 13, 1949, John was united in marriage to Shirley Johnson in Birnamwood. She survives.
John worked at the Wittenberg Enterprise for over 40 years, retiring in 1987. The couple owned and operated the former Evergreen Inn, Wittenberg, from 1961-1976. John was an active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Wittenberg and enjoyed woodworking, refinishing furniture, fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed playing cards and shooting pool but especially loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife Shirley, Wittenberg, four children; Dennis (Patricia) Hartleben, Eland, Melana (Ron) Schlueter, Birnamwood, Paul (Marcia Nueske) Hartleben, Wittenberg and Alan (Charis) Hartleben, River Falls, 9 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren and several other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by 7 brothers; Wesley, Maurice, Everett, Harvey, Roger, Mike and Mertz and one sister; Olive Tratz.
The Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, August 23, 2010 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Wittenberg. Rev. Amy Meyer will officiate. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Schmidt-Schulta Funeral Home, Wittenberg and again on Monday, at the church, from 10:00 am until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established.
