(WAOW) - Contrary to Tuesday's events, it appears that Auburndale native and former UW-Stevens Point star Jordan Zimmermann could still be back in the Major Leagues by the end of the week. Several sources reported on Monday that Zimmerman will start for the Washington Nationals on Thursday.
However, on Tuesday the Nationals called up righty Collin Balester to take the place of injured phenom Steven Strasburg. Despite the move, the Washington Post speculates that Balester, a reliever, will be sent back down on Thursday to accommodate Zimmermann's return to the starting rotation. The Nationals host St. Louis on Thursday night at 6:05pm Central Time.
The 24-year-old Zimmermann has been stellar in his minor league rehab starts following last season's Tommy John surgery. He's posted a 1.59 ERA in 10 appearances.
