Mold to delay opening of Oconto Co. school district

GILLETT, Wis. (AP) -- A school district in eastern Wisconsin is pushing back its start date after mold was found throughout an elementary school building.

School was scheduled to start Sept. 1 for the Gillett School District in Oconto County. The district announced Monday that the start date is now Sept. 13.

School officials originally canceled classes for just the elementary school, then decided it was best to keep everyone on the same schedule.

Superintendent Roy Jonjak told WLUK-TV that different start dates would cause problems with buses, child care and teacher contracts.

The district says the mold at the elementary school is mainly on the carpeting. No illness has been reported.

The district has about 700 students.
