For bait casting reels, nothing beats Abu-Garcia. I've used and promoted them for years. But spinning reels are another story. I've been a Shimano guy, even without the sponsorship and they've just one-upped everyone again at this year's ICAST show. That's the International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades…the holy grail of fishing where Shimano again took best of show honors for their Stella FE model freshwater spinning reel. This baby packs 14 bearings into a piece of machinery that's nearly impossible to foul, featuring a system that not only controls line twist but increases gearing efficiency, casting distance and power, even in saltwater. Test drive one of these right out of the box and you'll see what I mean. Now I don't want to sound like a Shimano commercial here but this one's built to take whatever you dish out and give you the feel of an ultralight right at the same time. What's not light however is the price, weighing in around 700 bucks. But if you're seriously into fishing and can justify the cost, it's well worth it. I'm Mike Michalak. Good luck on the water.
