Elderly fisherman rescued by off duty Vilas County Deputy


PRESS RELEASE (VILAS COUNTY)-- On Wednesday, August 25, 2010, at approximately 1:45 PM an elderly female saw Vilas County Deputy Matt McMahon's squad car parked in the yard of his residence in Manitowish Waters. The female went to Deputy McMahon's door and told him her husband went fishing on a small lake close to Deputy McMahons residence at 9AM this morning and he had not returned and she could not see him on the lake and she was very concerned for his safety. Deputy McMahon, who was off duty at the time, took his canoe and began searching the lake. He found the 83 year old fisherman clinging to his overturned boat. Deputy McMahon got the gentleman to a bog in the lake where further rescue was needed to get him to shore by Manitowish Waters EMS. The subject, who was suffering from hypothermia, was transported by Medic 5 to HYMC . The 83 year old fisherman stated he had been clinging to his overturned boat for approximately 3 hours prior to his rescue.
