Grant will help Northwoods river area

MINONG, Wis. (AP) -- A nearly $4 million state grant will be used to help preserve the Totogatic River area in northern Wisconsin.

Gov. Jim Doyle announced on Wednesday that the money will be used to protect the area under the Totogatic Wild Rives Project.

The Stewardship grant will protect more than 2,100 acres of forest and river frontage. Doyle's office says the area just south of Superior is an important habitat for diverse wildlife including forest interior bird species and plants.

The project will also open the area up to public outdoor recreation after it had formerly been used for industrial foresting. Land in the project is in Washburn and Douglas counties.
