Wausau School District awarded green grant

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- The Wausau School District is one of four schools in the state to receive a grant for its green energy efforts.

According to a news release from the district, the money will be awarded as a scholarship to one WSD graduate perusing a degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics this year.

Wausau schools qualified for the $1,500 scholarship because it is an Energy Star district. According to Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton's web site, an Energy Star District agrees to:

  • "Make a commitment to improve energy efficiency by 10 percent or more.
  • Measure and track the energy performance of their facilities where possible.  Tools are available through the Energy Star program at no cost.
  • Develop and implement a plan consistent with the Energy Star Energy Management Guidelines to achieve energy savings.
  • Educate staff and community members about energy efficiency."

Lawton awarded the grant to the Wausau School District and three others earlier this month.
