WSD receives STEM scholarship (PRESS RELEASE)

News Release # 4005

August 30, 2010

Wausau one of four Wisconsin districts to receive STEM scholarship

Earlier this month leaders from 25 school districts met at Sentry World in Stevens Point to discover which four Wisconsin Energy Star districts had been awarded the first annual Trane STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Scholarship. Twenty-five districts were invited to the event and Wausau School District was one of four districts across the state to be awarded this prestigious $1,500 scholarship for 2010-2011.

Energy Star districts were asked to apply for the grant that will be made to one graduating senior in the finalist districts this year. Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton, who has done much to advance the implementation of energy-saving measures in Wisconsin's schools, served as the keynote speaker for the event as part of her Energy Star School Challenge program. Trane selected 25 school districts from all applicants that best exemplified a comprehensive approach to the "Greening of Wisconsin Schools."

This spring the $1,500 scholarship will be awarded to a qualifying WSD graduate interested in pursuing a post-secondary education in the STEM career fields. For more information, contact
