MERRILL (WAOW) - Most public schools in our area start classes Wednesday morning. The activities scheduled for after school have lots of people excited in Merrill.
Kate Goodrich Elementary is selected a winner of a five-year federal grant called 21st Century.
The first year they'll receive $75,000 for afterschool programs that range from academic help to field trips to family nights.
The school had a scavenger hunt to help kids get used to being back to school and learn about the programs paid for by the grant.
Sandra Rusch/Grant Coordinator: "We feel very strongly in educating the whole child. When all of their needs are met they are more successful in school. They're more active and more involved and they're feeling important and valued here as part of our Kate family."
The scavenger hunt consisted of finding teachers. Those who checked everyone off their list receive a bracelet.
The grant starts at $75,000 the first year and could rise to as much as $100,000 per year.
