MOSINEE (WAOW) - Mosinee running back Joe Kahler kicked off his 2010 campaign with a bang last Friday night, rushing for 3 touchdowns in the Indians' win over Mauston. Fittingly, the senior also kicks off our new season of Newsline 9 Athletes of the Week.
Don't let his short stature fool you, standing at just 5'10, 190 pounds, Mosinee senior running back Joe Kahler does pack a pretty powerful punch. Though he's not a guy that likes to talk about it.
Says Head Coach Paul Nievinski, "When I told him you were coming out here to do this interview, he was like what for? He's just about the team, doesn't care about himself, he's a great hard worker, great leader, he was voted a captain by our team."
Says Joe Kahler, "I'm not the biggest guy but I think I got a big heart, running hard every play, just giving it 110 percent."
He credits his teammates for him rushing for 159 yards on just 13 carries against Mauston in the Indians' week one win and reaching the end zone three times in that game
Says Kahler, "When I do come into the game I'm gonna give my best effort every time, but like I said, my offensive line really stepped up and it paid off."
Says Nievinski, "And when you average over 12 yards per carry, I don't care who you're playing, you're doing some of that yourself and Joe did a super job Friday night."
Those are the types of performances Kahler will expect to get out of himself each and every week being one of the senior leaders.
Says Kahler, "Everybody is looking up to me as a senior to step up and make plays, and to do our best."
Says Nievinski, "Definitely he is a great leader, he's one of those kids, he doesn't care who you are, he's gonna step up and play football and do the best they can possibly do. And that's kinda what America is all about, that's what Joe Kahler's about."
Kahler and Mosinee head to Wittenberg-Birnamwood for week two coming up on Friday night. Reporting from Mosinee, Russ Owens, Newsline Nine Sports.
