George W. Johnson


George W. Johnson, age 79, of Plover, Wisconsin, died early Wednesday morning, Sep. 8, 2010, at home while under the care of his family and Ministry Home Care Hospice.

He was born March 12, 1931, in Hampton, Tennessee, to George "Billy" and Libby (Benfield) Johnson and he served in the U.S. Army and National Guard from 1951-1953, serving in the Korean War before being honorably discharged due to losing his leg. He received many medals and honors, including two Purple Hearts for his time served.

On Dec. 31, 1965, he married Wanda Franklin in Hampton. She died on March 2, 2005.

George worked for Joerns Furniture for 15 years before retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Plover-Whiting Lions Club and Union Baptist Church, and he enjoyed watching football, hunting, going to fairs and spending time with his granddaughter, Savannah.

Survivors include his daughter, Billie Jean (John) Tessen of Plover; son, Donald Johnson of Plover; granddaughter, Savannah Marie Tessen of Plover; three brothers, Charles (Janet) Johnson of Custer, Robert (Karen) Johnson of Almond, and Walter (Paulette Louis) Johnson of Tennessee; two sisters, Joyce James of Hampton, Tennessee, and Nancy Slutter of Elizabethton, Tennessee. Also, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents and wife, George was preceded in death by brother, Joe; sister, Faye; and daughter, Tracy.

The Johnson Family would like to thank Ministry Home Health Care and Ministry Home Hospice Care for everything they did for George. We would also like to thank Ministry St. Joseph's Hospital Heart Failure staff: Kris and Kathy for all their care of George as well.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Pisarski Community Funeral Home in Plover, 2911 Plover Road, with the Rev. Bill Christiansen officiating. Burial will take place in Maine Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and again on Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.
